The Power of the Pain of Marketing

I’m not a big sports fan, but this story captured my attention.

A quick synopsis is that the University of Kentucky is supposed to have a pretty good record of hoops, but 30-1, in regular season  and 16-0 in their southeastern conference.

You may be wondering why I’m talking about basketball because I don’t think I’ve seen an entire basketball game in my life. The reason is the Power of the Pain of marketing. If you don’t unlock that PAIN, you wont see incredible results.

The story is that the ESPNs commercial for its mobile app shows the shot of Kentucky losing at the last minute to Indiana. They play the commercial over and over and over and over and over and over. And every time the players on the team relive that loss over and over and over and over and over. It makes them mad enough where they never want to experience that again. It drives them to change.

Truthfully, if you are comfortable in your life where you are living right now,you probably won’t be able to make much of an impact in this world. You won’t care enough about what you are doing to make the big changes that will inevitably launch your career or your products into the stratosphere.

PAIN of marketing can be a powerful motivator. Kentucky hasn’t lost, but that one time at the time of this writing. What’s your PAINFUL motivation that will keep you going?
