Disciple Deep Unmasked

What does it mean to Disciple Deep?

I just finished watching Rey Meysterio interview on Netflix. He discussed the time honored tradition on the “mask”. You may be in the camp of wanting wrestlers to not wear masks. If a person has nothing to hide, why should they hide behind a mask? Rey Mysterio offered a different view-point. In his wrestling tradition, wearing a mask is a ime-honored tradition and very symbolic of his culture. This tradition is passed down from generation to generation. Keeping the tradition alive means honoring family and friends.

This brings up a very easy communication lesson, that will be good to learn early. Just because you act one way, doesn’t mean that others will know why you act a certain way. Rey Mysterio fans may think he should remove his mask because of their belief, but Rey’s belief in tradition and family is stronger. This belief goes beyond the surface. It goes to his core.

You will need a belief that goes to your core if you will succeed.

What is a deep-rooted belief that will make you succeed?

Sometimes, even our deepest beliefs are wrong. For example, yesterday I woke up to go into watch YuGiOh! with my 12 year old daughter. She said, “Dad, why don’t you go into the other room and watch it.” I stayed there and watched it with her anyway. But it did hurt my feelings to think she wouldn’t want to watch it with me. The teen years are coming. That night, I told her that she hurt my feelings. She said, “What I meant was that we could both go in to the other room and watch it on the bigger TV.” That made me feel better. I’m still dad.

This was just a shallow belief that my daughter doesn’t want to be around me. If I had taken that belief with me beyond a day, it really would have dampered our relationship– probably for years.

Some artists are working on beliefs that are completely wrong: Working in comics is hard. WRONG. You have to get 10,000 bad drawings out you before you get good drawings. WRONG. You aren’t any good until you get published. WRONG.

What is a deep-rooted belief that if you continue to hold will make you fail?

What does it mean to Disciple Deep?

Disciple Deep means to be strong in your talents and pass your knowledge onto others.

In the Bible, Paul urges his understudy, Timothy to do the same thing. “1 You then, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. 2 And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others.” 2 Timothy 2:2

The hours of work people put into getting to the top of their game takes a lot of time, work and heartache. Some people think if they put 10,000 hours into something, they will eventually get better. One would hope. For some reason people think if they get their 10,000 bad drawings out of the way, they will eventually be able to make good drawings. Reality is all they have to show for it are 10,000 bad drawings. You will be better to learn to make good drawings. Learn from someone who can teach you to make good drawings.

The time spent making those drawings will be the same, because we spend the time doing things we love. Thankfully, there is a way that will exponentially multiply the way to get better in those hours–creating a lot better results in a lot shorter time. I wish I had learned this much earlier.

1. Learn new skills.
2. Put the skills into practice.
3. Teach others what you just learned.

The quicker you move through the steps, from beginning to end will exponentially increase your skills, reduce the hours spent, and get you to a level of genius right away.

What do you want to learn? What do you need to teach to others?
